Saudade

Updated: 4 days ago

A Return to What We Have Always Known

There’s this one song I love—“saudade, saudade” by MARO. I was listening to it today, and something about it stayed with me. The word saudade itself is so powerful—it carries both the ache of something lost and the beauty of knowing it’s still with us, somewhere deep inside. It got me thinking about how this feeling connects to our spiritual journey, to the soul’s search for what it already knows but sometimes forgets.

MARO sings, “Nothing else to say, saudade, saudade,” and that’s what saudade does to us. It leaves us quiet, with just the feeling—because some things are not meant to be explained. They are meant to be lived, remembered, and felt.

The Gentle Ache of Longing

Saudade reminds me of the moments we pause and feel life as it is—like an old melody that takes you back, or a sunset that feels like it belongs to another time. It’s not about what’s gone; it’s about the love that remains.

Spiritually, this longing feels familiar. It’s like the soul’s way of whispering, “Come home.” In Vedanta, they speak of the Self—the eternal, unchanging truth beneath all that we think we are. Sometimes saudade is how we remember it. That gentle ache, that pull, is the soul looking for itself.

I think of what Paramahansa Yogananda said about the soul’s journey: that it is always moving back to the Divine. To long for something deeper, something infinite, is to start remembering where we came from.

Saudade as a Spiritual Guide

What I love about this word—and this song—is how it strips everything back to its essence. It’s honest. It’s simple. It reminds me of Rumi’s words:

“With life as short as a half-taken breath, don’t plant anything but love.”

Saudade teaches us to hold onto what matters, to let the longing guide us toward the truth. It’s not an emptiness; it’s full of life. The ache itself is sacred. It’s proof that we have loved, that we are connected to something bigger than ourselves.

A Return to Ourselves

Listening to this song today, I was reminded that saudade isn’t about moving on—it’s about returning. To what we once loved, to who we have always been, to the Source that never leaves us.

We’re not separate from what we long for. The love, the connection, the light we miss—it’s all still here. Saudade is just the way we find it again.

Nothing else to say—saudade, saudade.
